As I indicated to everyone in an earlier post, we launched Burrp! this past Tuesday, August 15th. What I didn’t tell you guys is that we went with a “Soft Launch”. This basically means we launched a scaled down version of our site for the first iteration with much fanfare. What we wanted to do was expand the feedback beyond just our alpha testers with some additional users.

We held off on all our marketing efforts and decided just to drop a post on the official Burrp! Blog. What we expected was maybe another 10-15 users, but in a matter of two days, it swelled to almost 100 registered users. Though this isn’t a lot, considering we hadn’t launched a marketing campaign, I was taken a back by the initial viral effect.

Now what ended up happening was that some prominent bloggers began to write about us once word got to them about the site. So this leaves us with the problem that major bloggers were writing about an alpha product. Luckily the reviews were mostly positive, so there was no need to panic, but it does reiterate the fact that in this day and age, there is no such thing as launching quietly. The bottom line is that the minute Google can index you, expect the first onslaught. Have several of your “killer” features up front and if needed push back your launch date to make sure they get in.
