Fidel by Estela Bravo is a mostly favorable documentary on the impact t of Fidel Castro.
The most notable aspect of this film is the great interview footage of Castro spanning the last 35-40 years. It is apparent that the filmmakers had access to many Spanish language interviews including Cuban state television pieces.
The film did not explore Castro’s government policies in depth nor did it offer opposing viewpoints in terms of Castro’s economic and political strategies. It however offers excellent insight into Castro’s desire to spread socialist beliefs across third world and developing nations through military, political, and monetary assistance. Castro’s support of socialist rebel movements throughout Africa was an interesting insight that I had not seen in other Castro documentaries.
I would have liked to see more analysis surrounding the expatriate Cuban community in Miami and how their lobbying efforts have helped shaped current US policy toward Cuba, particularly the embargo.
Overall I would give the film a 7 out of 10 due to a lack of in depth coverage of Cuban government activities. The footage of Castro over the years was excellent and really allows you to see the gifted speaking abilities and charisma of Castro.
