I know that the knock on Rackspace is that it is expensive, but their System Admins are second to none. They are very knowledgeable and thorough. I have seen many emergencies averted due to their quick responses (this goes out to Jonathan from Rackspace!). When it comes to smaller companies with limited resources, I would rather have my developer focused on development or product design rather than fiddle around with system issues. The additional cost of managed hosting usually pays for itself when you consider the extra time your developer is NOT spending writing code.
